Claremont residence – Claremont by Paul Lim at Mata Design Studio

The Brief
The brief for this heritage-listed, Federation Arts and Crafts residence was to create a new mudroom and scullery addition, as well as a wine cellar in an unused part of the house. The owners wanted the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry redesigned. They also wanted new cabinetry in the bedrooms and new lighting throughout. The design was to be modern and contemporary while still being sympathetic to the existing period home.

The Solution
The new mudroom, which connects the garage and house, forms an informal entry for visitors who may access the property from the right-of-way. The new scullery is connected to the kitchen via an existing window that was removed and the new room seamlessly blends into the existing building fabric.

The material palette includes black steel frames, cool grey stones and stainless steel which complements the natural earthy finishes of oak timbers that highlight aspects of the residence’s existing details, giving a contemporary, relaxed feel throughout.
