How passive solar design could reduce your energy bill

When designing a new home, integrating energy efficiency and solar considerations from the very earliest stages can create a lasting impact.

It’s no secret our homes are getting smarter, more connected and more energy-efficient. Solar panels added to a newly-built home can help to make a difference, but solar panels are only part of a truly energy-efficient home.

New Energy Lead at WA energy retailer Synergy, Aidon Thomas, will provide his expert advice regarding the things to consider when building a home to allow for solar. This free workshop covers block orientation, working with an architect to make the most of natural heating and cooling in the layout, why it’s important to correctly size a solar system, the factors that can impact on savings and more.

About Aidon Thomas:

After completing a BSc in Energy Studies at Murdoch University, Aidon has worked extensively in the energy industry over the past 10 years.

After graduating and completing a short contract role at the Sustainable Energy Development Office, Aidon worked as a sustainability consultant with GHD, working on emissions and energy related projects across multiple industries including sustainable housing development.

He then moved to Western Power where he worked on renewable energy and sustainability projects and is currently a New Energy Lead at Synergy, working on emerging technology related retail products and services across residential and business sectors.

This workshop is presented by Synergy.

Meet the Designer: Judith McDougall

Judith’s career in building design began 40 years ago. Her projects have varied from high rise commercial, apartments and unit developments through to residential designs, additions and renovations.

Her commercial experience includes aged care facilities, medical centres and sporting complexes, just to name a few. She has also been involved in assisting local government authorities to obtain funding for community projects.

She has been involved in designing projects that use everything from traditional double brick, brick veneer, reverse brick veneer, framed (both timber and steel), rammed earth, straw bale and SIPS panels.

Judith begins her design process by interviewing her clients to get to know how they “live” and what their dream is, she can then provide a design that achieves the dream whilst remaining within the budget. She understands that finding your way through the forest of building regulations and standards, council requirements and finding the right builder are all daunting tasks. She strives to take the stress out of this experience by navigating her clients through the process with a logical and practical approach. Judith enjoys her work and takes pride in the service and detail she delivers, which has resulted in many repeat clients.
