How passive solar design could reduce your energy bill

When designing a new home, integrating energy efficiency and solar considerations from the very earliest stages can create a lasting impact.

It’s no secret our homes are getting smarter, more connected and more energy-efficient. Solar panels added to a newly-built home can help to make a difference, but solar panels are only part of a truly energy-efficient home.

New Energy Lead at WA energy retailer Synergy, Aidon Thomas, will provide his expert advice regarding the things to consider when building a home to allow for solar. This free workshop covers block orientation, working with an architect to make the most of natural heating and cooling in the layout, why it’s important to correctly size a solar system, the factors that can impact on savings and more.

About Aidon Thomas:

After completing a BSc in Energy Studies at Murdoch University, Aidon has worked extensively in the energy industry over the past 10 years.

After graduating and completing a short contract role at the Sustainable Energy Development Office, Aidon worked as a sustainability consultant with GHD, working on emissions and energy related projects across multiple industries including sustainable housing development.

He then moved to Western Power where he worked on renewable energy and sustainability projects and is currently a New Energy Lead at Synergy, working on emerging technology related retail products and services across residential and business sectors.

This workshop is presented by Synergy.

Meet the Designer: Roger Joyner

Roger Joyner’s career has spanned decades in the architectural and design industries, including running his own UK design practice for 12 years.

Winning the Building Designers Association National Design Awards for his first home in Perth in 2002 drew a steady flow of private clients for solar passive designed homes. This culminated in the design and construction of the ‘South Perth House’ in 2010, which won most of the Western Australian Housing Industry Association GreenSmart awards in 2013, as well as their national award for Energy Efficiency and the WA Building Designers Association award for best Sustainable Residential Building in 2014.

Passivhaus Perth was formed in 2015, confirming a commitment to sustainable building design; one that provides quality assurance in the completed building envelope, providing high levels of thermal comfort and a healthy indoor environment. The resultant ultra-low energy use is a by-product of the ‘Fabric First’ concept, embodied within the Passivhaus system and at an affordable price.
