Choose appliances that are compact and multifunctional

28.02.2017

Being short on space doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing oven, dishwasher or laundry set-up.

According to Appliance Expert Rick Hart, with apartment and small-space living on the rise, many people are showing interest in appliances that are compact but still pack a punch.

“Appliance design and technology has come a long way in recent years, so you don’t always need to compromise,” Rick says. “These days, the majority of brands make compact appliances that are practical for small spaces and still look great.”

And some clever companies had developed appliances that can do more than one job.

“Multifunction appliances such as combi steam ovens and combination oven microwaves are great for optimising space within the kitchen,” he says.

Rick says some appliances, such as fridges and washers, are essential, but with clever planning, these larger items can be seamlessly integrated into whatever space is available, reducing clutter and creating the illusion of spaciousness.

“Choosing a built-in fridge and a dishwasher that can be tucked underneath the bench will save space and create a seamless and modern finish,” he says. “In the laundry, washer-dryer combos are also great for optimising space.”

Rick says when people think of downsizing, they often freak out about all the items they might have to learn to live without. But expert advice can reveal ways to avoid having to pare back at all.

“These days, there is no such thing as one size fits all. Some space-saving ideas might be great for someone who is living alone but totally impractical for a family,” he says.

“But more often than not, there is a solution for every problem and if you talk to a consultant or expert in the field, it is likely you will come across some options that you never even thought were possible.”
