Have you ever wondered why you can walk into someone’s kitchen and instantly feel at ease?
When we visit friends and family, we often gravitate to the kitchen and that makes perfect sense. It’s the place the host is most likely to be found, it’s the hub of activity and the source of tantalising scents. And if you’re lucky it is where you might find some pre-meal snacks and maybe even a tipple.
But why are some kitchens more alluring than others?
A well-planned kitchen probably yields a relaxed host and maybe more tasty offerings. But it also has to look the part. These days, there’s no reason why your kitchen can’t be every bit as appealing as your favourite local bar and restaurant.
The Basics
If the kitchen is not functional, there will be no joy. It is amazing how quickly cooking and entertaining can become a crashing bore at best and an absolute nightmare chore at worst, when the kitchen doesn’t make the job pleasurable.
You need to have certain things in place to make sure everything operates as it should.
Consult an expert for layout if you’re not a seasoned renovator or builder. Even if you are, there is no harm in getting a second opinion because two heads are better than one and this is one project you really need to nail.
Make sure there is ample space to wash and rinse and that the sink position relates to the dishwasher. Include plenty of bench space that opens to a more communal area so that there’s room in the kitchen for people other than the cook.
Look for the best storage options possible for the space you are working in. Storage makes life easier. Not only should you be able to access your favourite items and ingredients easily, you should also be able to put everything away with minimum effort and worry.
Some people love to express themselves with open storage, and if this is you, try to include some more discreet options as well, because sometimes kitchen items are untidy. Clutter makes it harder for the mind to operate.
Choose surfaces that are functional and can take the rough and tumble. If you’re worried about stains and accidental damage, you won’t feel joy.
