It is one of the hardest working rooms in the house. It’s the place where transformations happen – both physically and mentally. Where we go in feeling tired or foggy and slightly dishevelled and come out put together, renewed, relaxed.
There’s a lot that goes on in our bathrooms and it’s easy to focus on function over aesthetics. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s opportunity to turn this space into a haven and every homeowner who loves decorating should embrace that chance. Yet that doesn’t mean you’ll be compromising on function.
Bathing Beauty
Once you have nailed the functionality issue, it’s time to put some effort into the visual aspect.
There’s scope to create a stunning retreat, regardless of your budget or space constraints. Luxury can come in the form of openness and well-considered changes in levels. The difference between boring and beautiful is nothing more than a bit of imagination.
Even if you’re into neutrals, you can and should consider introducing points of interest in the form of pattern and texture. Tiled feature walls add interest and make a space look luxurious.
The arrangement of functional features such as taps, vanities, towel holders, lighting and even handles can all add flair. As can the choice of materials. Gone are the days when stainless steel was the only option. Mix the material palette as well. Throw in as many finishes and textures as possible.
Make sure there is plenty of light via windows or skylights. In summer, a light-filled space can help to feel connected to the outdoors and in winter it can provide a much-needed energy boost.
When clutter is out of sight, it is out of mind. Choose storage options that provide plenty of opportunity to stash non-essentials and you will create a calming space.
Treat yourself to some little extras. A heated towel rail, some pretty feature lighting, a luxurious shower head, some pretty tapware or some gorgeous towels will all help to elevate the space – even if a deep, jetted tub is out of the question.
